
Environmental Health and Housing Program in Los Angeles
Substandard housing conditions can cause or worsen significant health problems, such as lead poisoning or asthma. The Healthy Homes Healthy Families Initiative is a collaborative housing program between St. John’s, Strategic Actions for a Just Economy, and Esperanza Community Housing Corporation in Los Angeles.
The housing program has been recognized by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as a best practice to be shared with other community clinics across the nation.
Components of this housing program include:
SJCH’s Healthy Homes project (a collaboration with Esperanza Community Housing and Strategic Actions for a Just Economy) educates patients with conditions such as elevated blood-lead levels and asthma on how their housing conditions impact their health. Patients learn how to address household hazards and how to protect their rights as tenants.
