Advocacy
Since our inception, St. John’s has played a critical role in establishing a progressive public health agenda in Los Angeles, fighting in solidarity with the community and other organizations to ensure the equitable distribution of healthcare resources.
We work with patients and organizational partners to tear down barriers to health and well-being for ALL. All of St. John’s work is predicated on the belief that health care is a human right.
Community assessments, patient input and partner feedback led to the establishment of the following:
Goals:
- Establishing a base of leaders that advocates for improvements in their health care
- Improving health outcomes and access to quality care in our communities
Policy targets:
- Protecting Medicaid
- Preserving funding for community health centers
Strategies Include:
- Phone jams
- Petitions and letters to elected representatives
- Town Halls
- Actions at the offices of elected officials
- Delegations at public meetings
- Collecting stories on the importance of existing services.
To further our social agenda, St. John’s created the Right to Health Committee, a patient-led community organizing project with the mission of working to fix the broken health care system in South Los Angeles by ensuring that our health care is affordable, accessible, of high quality and provided by people with quality jobs.
The Right to Health Committee meets every fourth Wednesday of the month.
